Cleanliness
Dogs sometimes like to get a bit dirty when they are having fun but we will always try to ensure we return your dog as clean as when they first left. To help us out, we would appreciate a towel being left out for us on wet days upon collecting your dog for its walk.
Parasites
Worms, fleas and ticks in dogs can be a common issue that pet owners have to deal with. These pesky parasites can cause a range of health problems for our furry friends, from mild discomfort to more serious illnesses.
Prior to your dog boarding at 'New Dawn - Cornwall' you will need to provide details of your treatment plan for them. Your consent will also be required so that should your dog show evidence of external parasites (i.e. fleas, ticks, lice, worms etc), that on your behalf, we can have them treated with an appropriate product authorised by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate and licensed for used in the UK.
At 'New Dawn - Cornwall' we are strong supporters of natural remedies and have used them for many years; without problems, on our own dogs. They are tested frequently throughout the year and we are happy to discuss this with you if you'd like to find out more.

Vaccinations
To board with us, all dogs must show evidence (yearly) that they are vaccinated against:
For puppies, they should have ideally started their vaccines at around 6-8 weeks old, and have *2 injections, 2-4 weeks apart.
- Leptospirosis (booster every year)
Leptospirosis is spread in the pee of infected animals, most commonly rats, mice, cows, pigs and dogs and is a bacterial disease that causes serious illness by damaging vital organs such as the liver and kidneys. In humans, leptospirosis is known as ‘Weil’s disease’. After an initial primary course, leptospirosis vaccination is usually necessary every year. - Distemper (booster every three years, to stop their immunity decreasing over time)
A very serious, often fatal disease that affects several different organs in the body including the guts, heart, immune system, lungs, brain and nerves. After an initial primary course, distemper vaccination is usually necessary every three years. - Parvovirus (booster every three years, to stop their immunity decreasing over time)
A highly contagious, potentially deadly disease that causes severe vomiting and diarrhoea. After an initial primary course, parvo vaccination is usually necessary every three years. - Hepatitis (booster every three years, to stop their immunity decreasing over time)
A virus that attacks the liver, kidneys, eyes and blood vessels. Infectious hepatitis spreads in bodily fluids and can survive in the environment for up to a year. After an initial primary course, infectious hepatitis vaccination is usually necessary every three years.
- Kennel Cough - This vaccination is not a requirement to board with us but we do advise having these booster vaccinations yearly. Please note that we are unable to board any dog that has had the Kennel Cough vaccination within 2 weeks prior to the boarding date due to the vaccination being a live ingredient.
For puppies, they should have ideally started their vaccines at around 6-8 weeks old, and have *2 injections, 2-4 weeks apart.
- They will be fully protected 2-4 weeks after their final injection.
- Protection lasts 1 year – after which they’ll need a booster.
Titre Testing
At New Dawn, we accept 'titre testing' - which is a set of blood tests that check the immunity your dog has against the diseases they’ve had vaccines for in the past. Your vet may recommend titre testing if you are concerned about over vaccinating your dog, or if you are trying to reduce vaccinations because of a specific worry (e.g. a previous allergic reaction to a booster). There are times when your dog may need a titre to confirm their protection for a particular disease for other reasons, for example your dog may need a titre test after their rabies vaccine, if they are travelling to certain countries.
Titre testing isn’t a permanent alternative to vaccination boosters, because your dog’s immunity will run out eventually – but if your dog’s titre test results show that they still have some remaining protection against some of the diseases that were due for booster vaccinations, you may decide to leave those particular vaccines out of the schedule that year.
A limitation to titre tests is that they show you the level of protection your dog has at the time of their blood test, but do not guarantee that your dog will have enough protection for a full year afterwards. This means that theoretically your dog’s protection could run out half way through the following year, which would leave them unprotected for 6 months, until their next test and booster.
Titre tests are available for parvovirus, infectious hepatitis and distemper. There is no titre test available for leptospirosis, so your dog will always need their yearly booster for this, even if their results show that they are protected for other diseases.

Imported dogs & Brucella Canis
Brucella canis is a bacterium which causes canine brucellosis, an infectious disease which mainly affects dogs, but can also infect humans. Vets are seeing an increase in cases of Canine Brucellosis due to the rise in dogs being imported into the UK. Some infected dogs show no symptoms, which means they can silently carry Brucella canis without us knowing.
The UK was previously considered free of B. canis, but in recent years there has been a significant increase in the number of cases reported. In 2022, news emerged of the first UK case of dog-to-human transmission, highlighting the risks to those handling infected dogs. As awareness and concern has risen, testing for the infection has become more common in UK veterinary practices.
As dogs may not show any symptoms of infection, those that have been in the UK for some time are still at risk and could spread the disease. Even if your dog has been in the UK for many years, it is advisable to test for B. canis for peace of mind, or to enable you to take steps to protect yourself and others if they are infected.
To board your imported dog at 'New Dawn - Cornwall', we will require evidence that your dog has tested negative for Canine Brucellosis. This measure is to safeguard ourselves and the other dogs that we have stay.
